GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On Sunday night, the northern lights lit up the skies over West Michigan, along with “shooting stars” from the Perseid meteor shower. This stunning display is expected to last until early Monday morning.
The northern lights are often unpredictable, but a strong geomagnetic storm has made them visible in Michigan until dawn on Monday. By 11 p.m. on Sunday, people could see the lights as far south as Portage, Michigan. Sometimes, the lights might be hard to see with the naked eye but can be captured more clearly with a camera or smartphone.
The Perseid meteor shower is at its peak from Sunday night to Monday morning, with up to 50-100 meteors visible per hour. Clear weather is expected, making it a great opportunity for stargazers and those hoping to catch a glimpse of the aurora.
